When We Decide to Better Ourselves

According to a recent survey, seven in ten of today’s workforce say that they have considered a major career move in the last six to twelve months. If there is a silver lining to the pandemic, it is that people have been pushed to explore new opportunities in areas they are passionate about.

This week, I unfortunately had the wind knocked out of my sails, and so I was grateful for this week's nudge by Echo Han, Innovation Manager, who pulled me into a Hyper Island’s “Curious Mondays” lunch sharing by Kit Wong, managing director of Asia for eToro, a leading social investment platform.

Career Pivots" was the theme and he shared his personal story of starting out in advertising, his career journey over the last twenty years, before switching to his current role.

His sharing was peppered with his reflections on knowing thyself and where you are best placed to deliver your highest value.

Isn’t that the ideal we all strive for, yeah?

It was a timely reminder to help me figure out my next steps.

In the spirit of sharing, I thought I’d share my “Ah-hah” moments.

1. What is the key value you bring to the table?
The clarity in this is really important but also tough when you are trying to mould and up-skill yourself. Instead of giving a muddled response, I will iterate on a few key skills to test the response in terms of market value.

2. Demonstrate, don't tell me
Kit issued the challenge - "If you really want to enter this space, have you even read the MPI (Major Payment Institution Licence) by the Monetary Authority of Singapore? Are you up to date on the compliance regulations?" So, yes, I'm reading it to learn the rules of the game.

3. Mentors are those who give you the unvarnished truths
In times of difficult decisions, these are the people who help you assess the situation better or point out your blind spots. These are folks whom you have maintained relationships with throughout your career whether it is your former customers, boss, or colleagues. Keep in touch with them.

These were my learnings for the week, hope it sparks reflections in you too.

Curious Mondays is a series that explores inspirational topics that are important to our Hyper Island community. We invite speakers from the industry, students & alumni, with the intent of sharing knowledge openly to the public. The views and opinions expressed are those of the individuals and do not necessary represent the views of the organisation.
