Hyper Island offers free seat in any course for recently laid-off

SINGAPORE — 16 MARCH 2023 — Today, Hyper Island Asia Pacific is announcing a timely initiative that offers a free place in any course if one has just lost their job. As we head from one uncertainty into another—from crushing pandemics to global layoffs to exponential tech changes, it’s important to fortify ourselves against uncertainty. Instead of trying to avoid the unknown, one can equip themselves to embrace change.
In 2023 alone, Crunchbase reported that more than 94,000 workers in U.S.-based tech companies have been laid off in mass job cuts. In 2022, the number was more than 150,000. Layoffs have and are still sweeping the globe, and Asia is not immune. In Singapore, where 80 of the world’s top 100 tech companies are hosted, there have been nearly 60,000 tech layoffs in January alone.
Tech analysts have warned that another 15 to 20 percent of big tech employees could be without jobs over the next six months.
A 2021 study posits that one should upskill themselves to brace for changes brought about by artificial intelligence. The study found five sought-after skills: data analysis skills, digital competency, complex cognitive skills, decision-making, and continuous learning.
